Description
Ginkgo biloba, also known as the maidenhair tree, is a living fossil recognizably similar to fossils dating back 270 million years. It has various uses in traditional medicine and as a source of food. Some living specimens are claimed to be 2500 years old. They are extremely hardy and disease resistant. Six trees from 1-2 km from Hiroshima were among the few living things in the area to survive the blast and are still alive and marked with signs. They are popular for growing as bonsai. The ginkgo leaf is a symbol of the Urasenke school of Japanese tea ceremony. It is also the official tree and symbol of the Japanese city of Tokyo. ~ ref. Wikipedia
This leaf was photographed in autumn when the leaves turn a beautiful golden yellow.
