Description
I captured the reference photo for this hawk, which was perched on a dead tree branch overhead, when I was hiking on the Gettysburg Battlefield near Devil's Den last summer. They can be found year round on the battlefield where they enjoy hunting small rodents in the many grassy meadows. The Red-tailed Hawk is a bird of prey, one of three species colloquially known in the United States as the "chickenhawk", though it rarely preys on standard size chickens. In the United States, Red-tailed Hawks are often used in the sport of falconry. The Red-tailed Hawk has a thrilling, raspy scream that sounds exactly like a raptor should sound. Whenever a hawk or eagle appears on screen in a movie, the shrill cry on the soundtrack is almost always that of a Red-tailed Hawk. Their life span is approximately 21 years.
