Description
"When we think of those companions who traveled by our side down life's road, let us not say with sadness that they left us behind, but rather say with gentle gratitude that they were once with us." ~ Author Unknown
I had my first experience riding in a cart when I was five years old. My older brother and I drove a pony cart through my Great Uncle's fields for a test run before a family reunion. One of the entertainments for the children would be rides in the pony cart. This experience instilled a love of ponies and horses which has lasted my entire life. Carts and driving are a reminder of another era, before television, computers, I phones. A bit of nostalgia that I enjoy whenever I remember my first pony cart ride.
This watercolor was inspired by my friend's Meadowbrook driving cart captured several years ago at the Quentin Pennsylvania horse show. I often thought it would be wonderful to drive it through the countryside when the bluebells were in bloom. Won't you join me? :)
*The Meadowbrook Cart originated in Long Island, N.Y. where it was known as an East Williston cart. It was designed and built by Henry M. Willis. The Willis family owned most of the farmland in the area in the 1800's. Today, the Incorporated village of East Williston is in the town of North Hempstead, N.Y. in Nassau County. The Meadowbrook Cart has seat backs that fold, a dashboard, and fenders. They were designed for rough roads of the day. They ride more comfortably than road carts. ~ ref. Wikipedia
