Description
A male canvasback duck makes his appearance on the pond where his ladylove awaits at dawn. This is a crop and digitally enhanced version of my original watercolor, Canvasback Couple showing only the male or drake.
The Canvasback is a species of diving duck and one of the largest found in North America. An interesting fact about this type of duck is that they frequently lay their eggs in the nests of other canvasbacks, and another type of duck called the Redhead frequently will lay its eggs in the nests of Canvasbacks. The scientific name for this species of duck is,
Aythya valisineria americana, and is derived from the duck's favorite winter food, wild celery, with the name ,valisineria. The duck loves the buds and stems of this plant in winter and during the non breeding season.
