Description
The common milkweed is also called Asclepian Syriaca and besides being a great food for the Monarch Butterfly has some other interesting properties. For one thing the sap is poisonous and was used by Natives in Africa as a poison on their arrowheads. The silk fibers or floss of the pods is sometimes used as a filling for hypoallergenic pillows and is a great insulation. The milkweed flowers are some of the most complex flowers in the plant kingdom, comparable to orchids. So next time you drive past a field of milkweed take a second look. They are actually quite pretty when in bloom, and most of us as children have played with the seed pods in the fall, enjoyed setting free all of the little seeds with parachutes into the wind, wondering where they would go on their journey. Poof!
