Description
Seeds becoming airborne exit milkweed pods on a late October afternoon.
Not everyone sees the beauty of milkweed or its ripening pods, a common weed and quite hardy. It is a wonderful food for the Monarch butterfly when in bloom. Later in the fall the pods bursting open and releasing seeds to fly away on silken parachute threads delight children who discover the joy of shaking them and watching the little seeds drift away on a breeze. I was one of those children, growing up in the country without many play mates and looking forward to the days I would be able to fly away to somewhere more interesting and exciting, and now as an older person thinking perhaps those were the days that I would like to fly back to again. If nothing else, growing older gives us a greater perspective on all things. Poof, fly away little seeds, to the sun, to space, where will we, and they, all end up finally.

Glorious capture! I always call these milkweeds a second bloom when they go to seed. So beautiful and so different than the flower!
