Description
This whimsical work was inspired by the clochans, bee hive huts,or shepherd's huts, in County Kerry, near Dingle in Ireland. Temporary shelter was provided by these humble stone huts for shepherd's and sometimes their sheep during lambing and inclement weather. Some had thatched roofs, and some were entirely field stone. Occasionally, these huts were also used for cheese making. The original stone huts were thought to date back to the 12th Century. They remind me of hobbit houses and I find them so adorable, could not resist doing one in watercolor, pen and ink, with some slight digital enhancements.
There are also shepherd's huts on wheels for traveling to different locations to attend to flocks of grazing sheep. Currently with the tiny house movement and the Airbnb unique tourist lodging options, many of the shepherd's huts on wheels have been upgraded for tourists to rent when on holiday, and some are newly constructed, but designed to look like their historical counterparts.
