Description
I have captured this jay several times with my camera and noticed that her left eye was missing. She frequently has her head tilted upwards watching the sky for danger and it gives her a grateful appearance, at least to me. I decided to do her portrait and give her back her left eye. I imagine she is grateful to be alive after whatever disaster in her life took her eye. She is quite a survivor.
A Sentient Being's Prayer
I give thanks for the moments of my life,
The joy, pain, and reflective quiet times,
All make up who I am,
And I am grateful.

Such a beautiful painting and an equally beautiful story. It touches my heart that you decided to honor her in this way. Gratitude changes everything and thus is transformative. Thank you, Angela, for lighting the way with your work, your words, and by including A Sentient Being's Prayer.

Angela, I so love your story and your gift giving spirit. I remember a child psychologist saying to a group of parents, when a toy animal or doll gets broken, do not always fix the part. Let the child learn that not all things are perfect, and brokenness of body is not brokenness of spirit. The broken part lends an opportunity for loving as is. By taking time to admire and love this jay, you loved her for all she is, not what she doesn't have. Your painting is restorative and inspirational. Than you for this gift of sight- that you have shown to us, through your painting. LF

Another beauty Angela. I really love the soft colors you use. She truly is a survivor as much as birds depend on their eyesight. Fantastic. f/v :)

How did I miss the beautiful work! SO pretty the way he is looking up! I like that you did paint her eye there for her.. I also have shots of a female Cardinal with a leg that is damaged and sticks out to the side in an awkward position. I don't know if she was born that way of if she escaped from a cat perhaps. I always tried to make sure the feed was easy for her to access as it was so difficult for her to perch on the edge of the feeder. I'm glad there is someone else who still finds beauty even in the damaged things. v.f
Angela Davies replied:
Thanks for the very thoughtful comments Debbie as well as the fv! Greatly appreciated!

I commented before reading your description, Angela. This is so sad. No wonder she is grateful!
Angela Davies replied:
She seems to do very well with one eye and survived a tough winter. I am always amazed at the resilience of wild creatures.
