Description
The Christmas cactus, or Thanksgiving Cactus, comes in bloom at the beginning of the holiday season to brighten the dark gloomy November days. Mine in in full bloom right now well before Thanksgiving but since the leaves fell off the trees, I can use the cheer. Back story; this was a cutting from my older brother's cactus which originally came from my mother and is now over fifty years old. He has been the custodian of this family heirloom for almost that long. He has given me a few cuttings this one survived to bloom. He is the true green thumb in our family. :)
The stamens remind me of optic fibers backlit in the dark.

Angela, this is SO magnificent…yes…I also am reminded of the optics…remember ‘synthetic’ Christmas trees at the turn of the century with their fiber optics instead of the string of Christmas Lights? We still have the five foot one which I bought in Kansas because I stubbornly refused to unpack most of our belongings, ready for the exodus…I have finally made peace with that time of darkness in our lives and it fades into myriad shades of joy.

Yes, I do remember those trees, perhaps I give away my age, :) Thanks Laurel!
