My beautiful Betta fish named Flame enjoys a lap around his world filled with live plants and mossimo balls, which are a good form of living algae that grows in tropical streams, and is round in shape allowing them to roll around on the currents. These living balls of algae, which look like moss, can live as long as one hundred years in the right conditions. Nature never fails to amaze me.

Betta fish, also known as Siamese Fighting fish, derive their name from an ancient warrior group from Thailand and were given their name because of their fighting skills. The males are very territorial and do best kept alone. But they are very social with humans and can even be taught tricks. They love playing with a ping pong ball, pushing it around at the top of their tank or bowl. The aquarium variety has been selectively bred for color and long showy fins, so look different from their wild counterparts. There are so many beautiful varieties now that it is hard to make a choice when you decide to keep one as a pet. Flame basically chose me, showing off to me in the pet store and getting my attention right away. I hope I have him for several years. Their normal life span is about five years and most are already one year old when you find them for sale.
